Where Physics, Chemistry and Archaeology Meet: Applications and Case Studies in (p)XRF.

The event brought together more than 65 participants for talks, posters, World Cafe discussions, and informal networking, with support from NHM Vienna and HEAS.

Colloquium: Obsidian Analysis and Source Distribution

Lucas R. M. Johnson and Jeffrey Ferguson on validity, basics in obsidian analysis, and source distribution patterns.

The session focused on foundational and spatial approaches to obsidian analysis using pXRF, including validity, reproducibility, calibration, instrumentation, distance-decay, and complex spatial models.

Colloquium

Colloquium: pXRF, Environments, and Exchange in the Pacific

Mark Golitko and Robin Torrence on human-environment interaction, sediments, and museum collections in the Pacific region.

The talks addressed sediment cores, ancient coastal environments, climate change, indigenous agency, colonial-era exchange systems, and non-destructive museum analysis.

Workshop

Networking Event: Soil in Archaeology and pXRF

An informal workshop on geochemical approaches to soils, choma-facts, field-based pXRF, and interpretation of past human activity.

The workshop is planned as a constructive forum for exchange around soil chemistry, archaeological interpretation, and field-based analytical approaches. Registration contacts include Michaela Schauer, Luisa Dallai, and A. Hein.

EAA 2026: Session #90 and General Session pXRF Papers

Several papers originally associated with the pXRF session are expected to appear in Session #90 and the General Session.

Session #90, Integrating Micromorphology, takes place on 29 August 2026 from 2:00 to 6:30 pm in Room 820. One further paper is expected in the General Session on 27 August.

ARCH_RNT 2026

9th International Conference on Archaeological Research & New Technologies, with a thematic session on pottery productions in the Peloponnese.

The symposium focuses on new technologies in archaeology, archaeometry, computing, conservation, and restoration. Contributions may address provenance, manufacturing technology, and vessel use.
